a few shots of Ray’s art…

October 17, 2010 in fun stuff, on the homefront, shop news

From time to time, I’ve posted about my kid’s art. I’ve done several on Zel and her fiber sculptures and one earlier on Ray’s metal piece. Since our house has been filling up with Ray’s art lately, I thought I’d post some photos of other pieces he’s done.

This was his first:

followed by this one:

wooden sculpture

We have a pretty open house, but two of these large sculptures were most likely all we could find room comfortably for, so at this point Steve started encouraging him to do wall hangings. We had lots of wall space. We thought.

He has since created all of these:

So, somewhere along the same time frame, Steve encouraged Ray to work with paint. He got him a masonite board, some paints and he must have done this all in less than two hours:

I should also mention, that every one of these pieces and more, have been created as gifts for his father. Here’s his latest father’s day present:

And here’s Ray working on his robot:

The robot is a project he’s been working on for over a year now.

More on that later.

just in case you think you’re seeing things…

October 13, 2010 in classes, knitting related techno stuff, shop news, website news, wildflower designs

I admit to dabbling in all this website/blog code stuff and I may just go too far sometimes. When I get a notion, I can’t seem to stop myself. I’ll let you all in on a little secret. My latest diversion has been this bug to create a forum here and eventually add classrooms. Soooo, what that means to you- over the next few weeks- is that as I’m learning you may catch the blog looking a little wonky from time to time; you may already have for that matter. I welcome your comments as I go through this learning process.

I’m hoping to add a group forum, then offer individual online classes, tutorials for those who missed classes in the shops, help with those knitting my designs, you name it and I’ll probably try it! I’ll be testing it over the next month or so and hope to go live with it end of November.

Let me know what you think!

pink card winners!

October 2, 2010 in fun stuff, shop news

I’ve been a little remiss in getting the winners up lately. Our spring pink card winner was Cindy Cronin.

Cindy won 2 hanks of Noro yarn, a namaste bag and a gift card to Wildflower.

And more recently, Sheila Prince won the pink card drawing. Here she is with Jeanee chunky yarn, a couple of reference books and a book of baby knits.

We’ve been doing this for several years now with quarterly drawings at Wildflower. For those of you unfamiliar with “pink cards”, they are Wildflower’s way of giving back. Pink card holders gain a stamp for every $20 in purchases at Wildflower. 20 stamps earns a 20% shopping spree. But it doesn’t stop there! When you take advantage of your shopping spree, your card is entered into a drawing. I usually know the knitting style, level, needs of these winners, so prizes are matched accordingly. Congratulations, Cindy and Sheila!

meet mirror

September 21, 2010 in on the homefront

My new kitty, a distant relative of Mirlo’s.

He looks and feels so much like Mirlo it’s just spooky. In fact, it’s hard to tell them apart in pictures, but more about that later.

Settled in.

Pretty peaceful.

I’ll write his story and how he found me soon, but for now just wanted to share the news.

alchemy….silken straw and sanctuary…arrived!

silken straw and sanctuary from alchemy

silken straw and sanctuary from alchemy

Come see!

I spent most of yesterday dreaming of what I want to do with this gorgeous silk. Actually, I’ve been dreaming of it since ordering last June- and I have a few ideas involving half or maybe all the colors shown here. Truly, the picture does this fabulous fiber no justice. Do click on it and look more closely if you can. Better yet, stop in to see with your own eyes.

That’s all for now- best to leave this short and sweet.

wildflower designs now on patternfish

September 6, 2010 in knitting, shop news, wildflower designs

I’ve been steadily working over the past year rephotographing a lot of my patterns, revising and or writing up others and have added a number of them to Patternfish. If you haven’t discovered this wonderful pattern resource, go there now and check it out. I’m guessing you’ll recognize many of your favorite designers listed there. You can search any number of criteria and it’s super user friendly. These aren’t free patterns, folks, but there are thousands of beautiful designs to choose from and all available as pdf’s for download. I first became aware of Patternfish when I discovered I already had designs listed with them- through my work for Classic Elite Yarn Company. At that point I made a mental note to list my self-published designs there as soon as they are all re-photographed with live models, something we’re slowly working through. Right now, you can find 8 designs- for the most part vests and cardigans.

I’ll be adding these next three in the next couple of weeks- for sale as downloadable pdf’s both at Patternfish and my own site, wildflowerknits.com. Maybe y’all could help me come up with some good titles- that’s truly one of my weak areas!

side to side alpaca pullover

side to side alpaca pullover

This was originally published in a magazine called INKnitter’s, which is no longer in production. It’s knit side to side in a sport weight alpaca yarn.

Subtle Textures Jacket

Another side to side garment, this one was also previously published, this time in Cast On magazine.

It is knit with Plymouth’s “Fantasy Naturale” and very comfy to wear.

modular vest

This one is a variation of my Mini-Mitered Cardigan.

It uses sport weight yarn and features a crochet trim instead of the attached i-cord used in the cardigan.

All 3 coming soon! I have over 50 designs in various stages to write up, re-photograph, size out, etc, so stay tuned for more updates…

Here are some of the new Sundae colors:

Sundae was new from Berroco last year and a big hit here in the shop. Some of you may remember the scarf kit we put together using all 10 colors.

And here’s one of my favorites this season from Berroco: Remix. It’s got a little bit of everything in it- recycled from sweaters, this yarn is made up of cotton, acrylic, silk, linen and nylon. Great colors and patterns, too.

and one last photo before my battery died- the new pattern books are in, too. You can see more of these at Berroco’s website for a sneak peak inside.

Gwen Bortner Workshop

August 3, 2010 in classes, knitting, shop news, technique

Gwen at the XRX,Inc book aside her new book presentation

Mark your calendar for the first weekend in October.

Gwen Bortner is coming!

I remember when Gwen was here a few years ago, she was very excited about getting started on her new book on entrelac, “Entree to Entrelac”. And now, four years later, she’s embarking on a book signing tour this fall to promote it. She’ll be teaching a 2 day intensive entrelac workshop here, but beginners should not be discouraged. She’ll start with the basics and move on from there.

Gwen’s a great teacher and extremely knowledgeable on this technique! If someone hasn’t already dubbed her the “Entrelac Queen” they should. I have a feeling this book will dispel any thoughts out there lingering that entrelac is just about puffy texture. She’s already proven it’s beautiful felted- and her book is sure to take it to new levels.

I’m hoping to coordinate a trunk show of her beautiful pieces to have on display during her book signing Friday, Oct 1st and throughout her workshop to be held Saturday and Sunday. For more detailed information about the workshop or to sign up online, please check the registration page. Register by September 1st and get a copy of the book free!

swatching silken straw

June 29, 2010 in knitting, shop news

I get excited just looking at this yarn: “silken straw” from Alchemy Yarns.

silken straw from alchemy yarns

I know the picture can’t do it justice.

Let me just say that it really is silk (100%) and it really does look – but not feel- like straw. Something about the beauty of this fiber stirs me from deep within. I feel a connection when I hold it in my hands that goes deeper than I can begin to explain.

Here’s a swatch I did over the weekend.

More coming soon so stay tuned for updates. This yarn will be in the shop sometime August or September in 10 beautiful colorways. In the meantime, you can read about Alchemy Yarns of Transformation at their website. Or stop in the shop and get an “earful”. It really is hard for me to contain myself when I start talking out this yarn!
