For many years, I have taught Beginning Knitting. The projects in my beginning knitting class that have worked really well as a class are a Garter Stitch headband and a Stockinette Stitch hat. The first cast on we learn is the e-loop and the first stitch is the knit stitch. The project is a Garter Stitch Headband. I’ve included some of the videos here.

and the knit stitch:
After completing the Garter Stitch Headband, we go on to a Stockinette Stitch hat that is knit flat and later seamed. I do this so that new knitters are encouraged to learn how to make a good seam. I teach the mattress stitch seam for this. These are the stitches used in the Stockinette Stitch Hat.

And the purl stitch:
And the beauty of this is that you’re on your way to become an intermediate knitter in no time after learning the steps involved to make the headband and hat. Plus you have two great projects when you’re finished! How cool is that?
In this class you learn:
- to cast on two different ways
- the knit stitch
- Garter Stitch
- the purl stitch
- Stockinette Stitch
- some minimal shaping
- binding off your stitches
- the mattress stitch seam

This is not a new book. It was published in 2004 by Workman Publishing and was a number one best seller at Wildflower every year after!
Now that I have closed the shop, I no longer offer the beginning knitting classes, but I do plan to put them online in the near future. For now, I hope these videos can help you in some way. Please don’t hesitate to write with questions or comments!
